Fear the Walking Dead spoilers follow.
Fear the Walking Dead showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg have opened up about actor Demetrius Grosse’s unexpected return in the latest episode of the zombie-filled horror drama’s seventh season.
Back in the season six premiere, Grosse was introduced as Emile LaRoux, a bounty hunter who was hired by Virginia and tasked with tracking down Morgan Jones (Lennie James). With the help of new friend Isaac, the latter wound up killing Emile and stole his clothes and weapons before leaving his zombified head for Virginia to find.
In ‘Six Hours’, which aired in the US on Sunday night (October 24), Grosse returned onscreen as Emile’s twin Josiah, who was seen opening the box that contained his brother’s reanimated remains.
“We absolutely fell in love with Demetrius Grosse’s portrayal of the character of Emile,” Goldberg explained to Entertainment Weekly when asked whether the Banshee star’s return was always in the pipeline.
“That’s why if you go back and watch that episode, there was a line when Emile is at the campfire at the beginning where he talks about the beans being his brother’s recipe. We intentionally did that then because, in our back pocket, we always knew we wanted to have this moment.
“The moment we wrote that, we wanted to have the moment later where a hand reached into the box carrying that head, held it up, and we saw that it was the same face staring back at the head,” he continued.
“That’s where the initial inspiration was. Beyond that, we will learn more about this character, Josiah. We will see more of him. But for now, that’s all I’ll say, because there’s a lot of fun stuff with him to come.”
Fear the Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on AMC UK in the UK.
