Red Dead Redemption 2, the critically acclaimed Wild West game from Grand Theft Auto studio Rockstar, is now free to play for PlayStation Now subscribers.
That means you can get hundreds of hours of looting, shooting, lassoing up bad guys, riding horses, gambling and so much more for no extra cost if you’ve got PS Now.
That’s not the only free game that was announced — and made available — this week. The PS4 versions of Yakuza spin-off Judgment and samurai slash-’em-up Nioh 2, funny and frustrating indie Moving Out, racer Nascar Heat 5, and Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 have all joined the service. If that’s not enough, the incredible 2018 God of War is back too.
If you’re a bit confused as to what PlayStation Now is, and how it differs from PlayStation Plus, let us explain.
PS Plus is the subscription service that lets you play games online and have access to cloud saves. You also get a handful of free games every month that you can download and play as long as you are actively subscribed. You can check out this month’s solid list of free games right here.
PS Now is a bit more complex, but in short, it’s like Netflix for games. Subscribers get access to a library of hundreds of PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles they can stream on console or PC. The PS2 and Ps4 titles can also be downloaded to consoles.
Similarly to Netflix, games get cycled in and out. For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 is only available until November 1, while Judgment leaves the service on October 4. Interestingly, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the first Ps4 game on the service to be download only without a streaming option.
Thankfully, you can play any games you stream or download through PS Now online with friends without needing a PS Plus subscription. Usually, PS Now subscribers get the bigger games before they come to Plus, but the latter has been debuting fun multiplayer titles like Bugsnax, Operation: Tango and Fall Guys recently.
Meanwhile, Xbox recently expanded its Game Pass Ultimate subscription to let you stream games to phones and PC. And we hope PS Now will also add this feature in the future.
