The Walking Dead: World Beyond showrunner Matt Negrete has opened up about his decision to have a director team made up only of females for the show’s second and final season.
He admitted the aim was to have a group of talented directors “with differing voices and backgrounds that reflected the diversity of the cast”, and that they didn’t quite have it gender equal on season one.
“Equity was a big part of the decision making,” Negrete told Entertainment Weekly, though he said he met with both men and women ahead of shooting, but it was Loren Yaconelli, Aisha Tyler, Heather Cappiello and Lily Mariye who landed the job.
“I’ve been in so many departmental and prep meetings that were either comprised of all men, or where the men greatly outnumbered the women, so ultimately, my decision just felt right on a number of levels.
“And, in the end, I think all of these talented directors brought a unique part of themselves to their episodes to great success.”
Negrete said as the season went on, he was approached by several crew members who said how proud they were to be involved in the show which had so many women in key roles.
“I have to say, it means a lot to hear so many others express what this means to them,” he admitted. “It’s really reinforced for me the value of diversity, equity and inclusion not just in the film industry, but in every line of work.”
During The Walking Dead‘s Comic-Con panel in the summer, the show’s place in the confusing TWD universe timeline was confirmed.
TWD chief content officer Scott Gimple revealed the two-season series takes place after Fear The Walking Dead season 7 but before TWD season 11 – which means the original show’s final run is the furthest forward in time.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2 will premiere on Sunday, October 3 on AMC in the US. You can stream the series on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
